CCTV Camera Buyer's Guide Australia

CCTV Camera Buyer's Guide — How to Choose Security Cameras in Australia

This guide covers everything you need to know about buying CCTV cameras for your home or business, including camera types, resolution, night vision, recording options, and how to choose between leading brands.

What types of CCTV cameras are available?

IP Cameras (Network Cameras)

The modern standard. IP cameras connect to your network via ethernet cable (usually PoE) and record to an NVR. They offer higher resolution (2MP to 8MP 4K), smart AI features, and easy remote viewing via smartphone apps. Most cameras sold by Tekcart are IP cameras.

HDCVI / Analogue Cameras

Traditional cameras that connect via coaxial cable to a DVR recorder. Lower cost for upgrading existing analogue systems. Dahua's HDCVI cameras offer 4MP and 8MP resolution over coax.

What resolution CCTV camera do I need?

  • 2MP (1080p Full HD) — Good for general surveillance in most situations. Covers standard rooms and entry points clearly.
  • 4MP (2K) — Better detail, useful for larger areas or where you need to read licence plates and identify faces at distance.
  • 5MP/6MP — High clarity for wide-angle views or areas needing detailed identification.
  • 8MP (4K Ultra HD) — Maximum detail. Ideal for car parks, large retail spaces, and perimeters where you need to capture fine detail at range.

What is the difference between Dahua, Hikvision, and HiLook?

  • Dahua — Chinese manufacturer, one of the world's top two CCTV brands. Known for excellent value, strong AI features (WizSense, WizMind), and solid Australian distribution through Seadan and others. Tekcart is an authorised Dahua reseller.
  • Hikvision — The world's largest CCTV manufacturer. Excellent image quality, wide product range. Hikvision cameras are sold through authorised Australian distributors.
  • HiLook by Hikvision — Hikvision's value brand, offering similar quality at a lower price point. Ideal for budget-conscious installations.

What is PoE and do I need it?

PoE (Power over Ethernet) allows a single ethernet cable to carry both data and power to the camera. This simplifies installation — no separate power cable required. Most modern IP cameras support PoE. You'll need a PoE NVR or a PoE network switch.

What is the difference between an NVR and a DVR?

An NVR (Network Video Recorder) works with IP cameras over your network. A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) works with analogue/HDCVI cameras via coaxial cable. If you're starting a new system, an NVR + IP cameras is the recommended approach. If you have an existing analogue setup, a HDCVI DVR lets you reuse your cabling.

What is AI Smart Detection (SMD)?

Smart Motion Detection (SMD) uses AI to distinguish between humans and vehicles vs pets and moving trees, reducing false alarms dramatically. Dahua's WizSense cameras and Hikvision's AcuSense cameras both include SMD. Highly recommended for homes and businesses that want useful alerts, not constant noise.

What does the IP rating mean for outdoor cameras?

The IP (Ingress Protection) rating indicates weather resistance. IP67 means the camera is dust-tight and can withstand immersion in water up to 1m — suitable for all Australian outdoor conditions. IP66 is protected against powerful water jets. All outdoor cameras at Tekcart are IP66 or IP67 rated.

How many cameras do I need?

For a typical Australian home (4-bedroom): 4–8 cameras covering front door, back door, driveway, and side access points. For a small business (retail shop): 4–8 cameras covering entry/exit, till areas, stockroom, and external perimeter. Start with the key entry points and expand from there.
